Air transportation is one of the fastest transportation mediums available. In Nepal, we have only one international airport in operation i.e. Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). Moreover, two international airports are scheduled for international flights to start in early 2022. Today in this article we are going to talk about the Tribhuvan International Airport. Air Transport in Nepal- History
The history of aviation in Nepal starts in 1949. It started with the landing of a Beechcraft Bonanza bringing the then Indian ambassador to Nepal. Initially, the aircraft used to land on Gauchar (now TIA) in Kathmandu. In 1955, King Mahendra inaugurated Gauchar Airport and renamed it Tribhuvan Airport.
Later, the Tribhuvan International Airport Grassy runway was reconstructed into a concrete one in 1957. In 1960, Nepal received the membership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). CAAN is the regulator of civil aviation as well as the service provider in Nepal.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has been in operation since 31 December 1998 under the Civil Aviation Act, 1996. Nepal has signed Bilateral Air Service Contracts (BASC) and Memorandums of Understanding with 39 countries.
Tribhuvan International Airport- Introduction
The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) is situated 5.56 km east of Kathmandu city. TIA is in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, that provides various facilities to its visitor. It not only has flourished as one of the main hubs for every expanding business of the country.
Moreover, it has proudly catered to various domestic and international airlines. Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has been in operation since 1949. In Nepal, we have more than 45 domestic airports in operation. However, TIA is still the one and only international airport here.

TIA is the sole international airport in Nepal. Thus, all the international flights arriving in and departing from Nepal take on and take off here.
