Air Transport in Nepal- History

The history of aviation in Nepal starts in 1949. It started with the landing of a Beechcraft Bonanza bringing the then Indian ambassador to Nepal. Initially, the aircraft used to land on Gauchar (now TIA) in Kathmandu. In 1955, King Mahendra inaugurated Gauchar Airport and renamed it Tribhuvan Airport.

Later, the Tribhuvan International Airport Grassy runway was reconstructed into a concrete one in 1957. In 1960, Nepal received the membership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). CAAN is the regulator of civil aviation as well as the service provider in Nepal.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has been in operation since 31 December 1998 under the Civil Aviation Act, 1996. Nepal has signed Bilateral Air Service Contracts (BASC) and Memorandums of Understanding with 39 countries.
